Preface: One must specify American-football, as opposed to normal football which Americans call soccer. This is a very important distinction to make, because this sport is most definitely American and uniquely so and widely unknown outside of America, and it is unacceptable to confuse it with the football known to the rest of the world.
And now I begin the story.
It was the great annual American-football game to which all American Sunday night routine gives precedence, for which pizza places run their most amazing deals, and during which the most controversial new ads and halftime shows air to be praised and laughed at and hated and debated for weeks after the Event. And which this particular little bird never took the time to observe until last night. No truly-- she had never before witnessed this Event.
My First Watching took place in the living room of our small apartment with four or five girls who are avid fans, and plenty of animal crackers. It was a memorable experience. Not so much because it was a good game (which it was) or because I hadn't had animal crackers in so long (which I hadn't), but because the watching of a sports event was being observed on a national scale with a level of commitment and number of trappings that in most cultures characterize only the solemnest and deepest of traditions. I felt I was being very American, and a part of something very big nationally. It is a unique feeling.
Here is the official winner of the little brown bird's commercial contest from the Event: Best Commercial
Also, note the turn over of the Things of the Month.
In other news, the Roommates are holding up well under the vicious burden of mono. My cough is gone (finally) except for a final attack last night that came upon me while in the throes of an intense laughter. My psychology textbook is tempting me to pursue a second undergrad degree after I get my English one-- more on that as the semesters progress. And finally, a YouTube browsing last night discovered many beautiful treasures for me, including the Canadian Tenors. I do not know why I have never heard of them before. Here they are, singing the little brown bird's Song of the Month: The Canadian Tenors
