About a month ago, the same realization knocked and entered, but soon left because it was rudely ignored. I failed to acknowledge its presence because I was working on an overdue assignment.
About two weeks ago, it came again, but this time the door was locked, and I didn't hear the knock because I was not there. I was at work all day.
Two days ago, it came again and stood outside my door, hesitating as though wondering whether it should knock or go on its way. In my absorbed state with the overdue articles I was proofreading for the school newspaper, I scarcely noticed it hanging around and unconsciously heard its departing step through my window, which was open to the perfect South Carolina October weather.
Tonight, it paused briefly as though it weren't sure if it should stop at all. And suddenly missing my old friend, I set aside my business. I repented myself of my previous rudeness and neglect, and invited it in out of the rain for a long overdue conversation and a cup of hot tea.
